The facility is a 4 hole short course. The Joe Balander Learning Center is a 4 hole golf course with holes that are 156 yards, 200 yards, 103 yard and 83 yards., with rolling terrain and various elevations. The idea was conceived by long time Golf Professional Joe Balander. The intent was to give golfers a place to learn the game in a non threatening environment, and gain the confidence to play on the regulation course. In addition the course offers a place for all levels to work on their mid to short game. There is no pressure when practicing at Joe Balander, practicing your game is what this Austin golf course is meant for. Although there are no long holes here the course still allows you to practice your mid to short game.

This is a course where young golfers can learn how to play. It consists of four 3-par holes of varying lengths. The green fee is only three dollars and permits golfers to play the four holes as many times as they want on that day--it is a bargain. The tee boxes and fairways are in great condition, better than on some 18-hole municipal courses in the area. The grass on the greens is healthy, but is too long since it isn't mowed enough. The main other shortfall, besides the greens not being mowed enough, is that two of the holes are really too short at under 100 yards and one is a bit long at around 200 yards. Despite the few negatives, I think it's the best place for a beginning golfer to get started in Austin, Texas.
